The Biewer (pronounced: bee-vir) seems to be called by several names: Biewers, Biewer Terrier, Biewer Yorkshire Terrier, or Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon, depending on the club the breeder is a member of. Whatever- the Biewer is gaining popularity all over the world, and is now working its way into the hearts of South African dog lovers as well.
What is of more importance however, is the PEDIGREE of your dog. This can be useful in tracing the lineage of the dog, medical problems in certain bloodlines and genetics.
All Biewers, whether they were bred in Germany, the United States, Holland, Hungary, South Africa, or anywhere else, should trace back to two Yorkshire Terriers Darling von Friedheck and Fru-Fru von Friedheck both Dortmund Champions of Werner and Gertrude Biewer from Germany. (For examples of how to track back the pedigree of your Biewer, see info below, just above the BYTCSA logo!) When they decided to show with a son, Schneeflocken, from these two Yorkie Champions, he was marked “wrong colour – not for breeding” by The German Kennel Club (the VDH) for being blue white and gold. Had the VDH (Verband fur das Deutsche Hundewesen) accepted him then as a tri coloured (blue, white and gold) Yorkshire Terrier, the Biewer breed would never had existed to this day and they would probably have been called Tri Coloured Yorkshire Terriers. Of course Mr. Biewer was not impressed at all and he started looking for a registry that would register his black and white Yorkies. The ACH (Allgemener Club der Hundefreunde Deutschland e.V) was the first club to accept them as a breed and registered them as a Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon. Although the exact meaning has not been confirmed, it is thought to mean tassels of silk yarn. From the name alone you can see that it is heavily ensconced with the Yorkshire Terrier.
The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier Club of South Africa has started its own pedigree registry.
All breeder members of BYTCSA are obliged to supply a blood sample or a buccal swab sample of each Biewer in order to establish a DNA profile or “fingerprint”. This unique DNA profile is then stored in a data base at The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at Onderstepoort Faculty of Veterinary Science. The pedigrees of the pups are then verified by comparing their DNA to those of their parents in order to ensure that registered Biewers are only from Biewer to Biewer mating; thereby protecting the breed and the integrity of the SA breeders as well as that of the local Biewer pedigree records.
